Susan Kurtzman from the Truro Historical Society will come on Tuesday, July 30 at 10:00am as part of our TENT Talks series, to discuss the museum's newest exhibit on view this summer, New Conections: The Railroad Era in Truro from 1873–1960.

For centuries, Truro connected with the outside world primarily by sea. With the shoaling of Truro’s Pamet Harbor in the 1850s, sea travel to locations beyond the Outer Cape was possible only through the deeper harbors of Provincetown or Wellfleet. Travel by land along sandy, unreliable carriage roads was time consuming and arduous.

Finally, in 1873, the railroad re-connected Truro to the world with the promise of quick and reliable travel. There were actually four stops in Truro and one could take the train from NYC to Boston and all the way to Provincetown.

How long did the Railroad run to the Outer Cape? What happened? What were some of the challenges? Why don't we have a train today? These are some of the questions that will be answered at this talk.
